Patricia has always had a passion toward the healthcare field, specifically alternative. She graduated from Seminar Network International School of Massage in south Florida in 1995. Initially she worked closely with physical therapists, chiropractors and also in the spa atmosphere. After those experiences she realized how much she enjoyed helping people get out of pain naturally. She felt this to be most beneficial to have a more clinical background and training in order to help those suffering from pain. Hence, Patricia opened Body & Soul Wellness Center in 1998. Although Body & Soul is an alternative pain relief studio, the atmosphere is quiet and calm so you can get the best results.

Listed below are only some of the continuing education classes Patricia specializes in. These techniques are from some of the BEST in our field.

Myofascial Release – 2010 John Barnes, PT Technique

Myoskeletal Alignment Technique – 2009 Eric Dalton Ph.D.

Orthopedic Massage & Pain Management – 2007 James Waslaski

Certified Reflexologist – 2006

Neuromuscular Trigger Point Therapy – 2000

Manual Lymphatic Drainage – 1995 Vodder Technique

Laser Therapy with USA Quit Smoking for smoking cessation is a biophysical, chemical-free application of light stimulation energy to nerve endings on the surface of the auricle (ear) to physiologically alleviate symptoms of nicotine withdrawal by redirecting the flow of energy through neurological pathways and signaling molecules, thus creating balance of mood, thoughts and physical symptoms. Laser Therapy is a preventive health therapy that takes into account the individual, circumstances and environment as a functioning system.

There are many options available to help people become smoke free such as pharmaceuticals, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and counseling. How does one know what is the right approach for them? Consider the following:

1) Counseling can be helpful but may not be enough for some individuals.

2) NRT is in effect providing the same drug in another form without addressing the underlying neurobiological imbalances associated with smoking. Some people smoke while using the patch. Certain health conditions preclude the use of nicotine patch, so check with your doctor on this.

3) Some pharmaceuticals currently advocated for smoking cessation cause numerous dangerous adverse effects such as suicide justifying the issuing of FDA warnings (Feb. 2009).

4) Laser Therapy with USA Quit Smoking is a safe, natural and environmentally friendly option for most. It is generally not used during pregnancy, cardiac pacemakers, insulin pumps, schizophrenia, and other severe mental health disorders such as depression.

It is natural, without adverse side effect and is especially useful for individuals who are unable or unwilling to use chemicals in therapy.

Unless a massage therapist has been recommended to you by a friend or family member, it can be a challenge to find a good one. Many people are forced to choose one at random or from a list provided by their insurance company.

But regardless of how you select a therapist, there are several things that should happen before your first massage:

1. A knowledgeable massage therapist will offer to answer any questions you have about his or her experience and licenses. Advanced training and continuing education are needed for a massage therapist to provide safe, qualified services.

2. A thorough evaluation of your entire body should be performed so that the massage therapist can determine what’s causing your pain.

3. Once the source of pain is identified, the massage therapist should check for flexibility and range of motion in that area of your body.

4. A qualified massage therapist knows that the patient plays a critically important role in his or her own treatment. The therapist should be able to explain the treatment plan and thoroughly answer any questions or concerns you have about expected results.

What is posture alignment therapy? Postural alignment therapy uses the muscles of our body through a series of individually designed repositioning, strengthening, stretching or functional exercises to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction. Each exercise is specific to your posture deviations. The exercises are designed to facilitate normal muscle function and interaction. Muscles that are balanced work properly and provide the body with the ability to move more efficiently. (some of the exercises may be similar to yoga or pilates)

How can this help me? When your posture is compromised, different muscles are being used to help you to move the bones, which mean your muscles are working overtime – to do whatever task you are asking your body to perform; this is compensation. To simplify, you are now having the wrong muscles moving your bones inefficiently and incorrectly. Bones do what the muscles tell them to do. The muscles that should be working are turned off or not in use, and the muscles that should not be working are turned on.

Proper Alignment is when the shoulders, hips, knees ankles are directly stacked on top of one another.

Your Session:

~ We take 4 digital photos. (front, back, left, right sides)

~ Functional Movement Test – (Identifies dysfunctional movement patterns and asymmetries within the body that cause limitation.)

~ Design and implement a personalized postural exercise program.

Assessment:

This is a unique biomechanically based system of combined movement pattern evaluation and comprehensive joint motion analysis. It will identify postural deviations, detect muscular imbalances, and show movement limitations that collectively create compensation, cause pain, inhibit performance and deteriorate overall health.

What to wear:

~ T-shirt, tank top or sports bra

~ Shorts, comfortable pants or sweatpants (pants must be able to pull-up pass your knees)

~ Light colored clothing preferred when taking photos, tennis shoes

What You Will Receive:

~ A digital print out of your posture

~ A printed personalized exercise program

~ A better understanding of your posture

~ Equipment may be optional

Have you tried stretching your back muscles till the cows come home and still having back pain? Well, the reason may be due to the fact that the muscles you are stretching are not where the problem is coming from.

The pain can become chronic or recurring. Other painful symptoms may include, tingling, numbness or burning into the legs and/or groin area. Or you may only be experiencing pain in the back. You may also have difficulties, from getting up from a sitting position, difficulty getting out of bed, or walking with a hunched over posture.

In order to understand that the pain you are experiencing in your back may not be the “cause” of your pain, you need to understand some muscle anatomy and the action that particular muscle does. There are actually 2 parts to this muscle, psoas and the iliacus, hence iliopsoas.

The psoas is actually one of the hip flexor muscles. It connects from the low back vertebrae, down across the front of the hip to the femur or thigh bone. It is located mainly on the front of the pelvis (hip area). The psoas flexes and laterally (out to the side) rotates the thigh at the hip and flexes the spinal column.

The causes of pain are multiple and cumulative. When the psoas is in a constant state of flexion (tightness) it pulls on the spinal muscles which in turn may cause compression on the intervertebral discs. When in this constant state of contraction, the muscles become ischemic, (lack of blood flow) and become shortened over a period of time.

Activities to avoid when during a painful episode:

Standing squatting or sitting for long periods of time, sleeping awkward or on your stomach – pulling your knees to your chest. This will make your back worse by tightening the psoas muscle. It needs to relax. Oh, and of course any strengthening exercises as you will obviously not be able to do this while you’re in pain. (Strengthening is done last in a sequenced series of therapy sessions)

Although there are other muscles that contribute to low back pain, it is in my opinion the psoas is one of the main culprits of back pain.

Specialized manual therapy techniques from an experienced therapist with home therapeutic exercise in most cases will get you out of pain.

Here are some simple yet, effective stretches you can do at home.

Tips: Never stretch into pain but you may feel a slight discomfort, do not bounce. Make sure your body is warm such as walking/jogging in place for 5 minutes. The idea is to get the blood flowing and warm the muscles.

Psoas Stretch: Lunge forward with knee on padded mat. Position foot beyond forward knee. Place hands on knee. Straighten hip of rear leg by pushing hips forward. Hold stretch. Repeat with opposite side. Hold for 30 seconds 3 times each side.

Sitting Groin Stretch: Sit with your soles together. Bring your feet towards your groin, hold your ankles. Push your knees (gently) towards the ground with your elbows. Keep your back straight. Hold for 30 seconds 3 separate times.

Warnings: See your doctor o go to the emergency room if your pain is severe, if you lose control of your bladder or bowels or if you lose feeling or movement.

If you have been in a car accident you most likely have caused trauma to the soft tissue/muscles of your spine or other part of your body such as neck, back or head. The most common injury is whiplash or strain/sprain of the neck.

Your doctor may prescribe massage therapy as part of your treatment plan, but not just any massage. It is imperative your therapist be experienced and has advanced massage therapy techniques and education in their tool box. By incorporating a variety of modalities you will get much better results as opposed to only one type of massage technique. Prior to seeking massage therapy you need to get a prescription from your doctor. It must have the following: Diagnoses, procedure or modality, example: massage therapy, and how often.

Immediately following a car accident depending on the severity, you may have pain or discomfort. If you do not have pain immediately after the accident it can show up days, weeks, or possibly even months later. You need to see your doctor for a thorough exam before soft tissue therapy. You want to make sure you do not have any severe trauma, as this would be contraindicated. In most cases massage/manual therapy for soft tissue injury is indicated and will help heal the injured area. If left untreated scar tissue builds up also causing compensations of the muscular system and therefore causing worse problems.

Massage helps aid in recovery of soft tissue injury, stress and anxiety from the accident. Soft tissue injuries, (soft tissue is muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia) invisible on x-rays are often overlooked and, can cause severe debilitating pain after a car accident if not treated properly.

As a guideline, if your vehicle has accident damage of any sort, your body will most likely have injury damage also. It may show up much later causing long term or even permanent problems. The point here being, regardless of the severity of a car accident, you should be checked out thoroughly by a health care professional as soon as possible.

If you’re in pain and have been injured from an auto accident, don’t wait any longer to get the care you rightfully deserve.

I had a friend call me for a massage since she was having a lot of neck and shoulder pain. Unfortunately, I was out of town and of course could not help. She decided to call a place in town since she had a coupon for a $40.00 1 hour massage. Suffice it to say, I called her back to see how she was feeling the next day and she explained that she was in more pain than before she had the massage. I asked her to explain as best she could what the therapist did for her pain. She stated the massage therapist just “dug” in real deep into the area that was already painful. No pain, no gain the therapist said, and of course not knowing, my friend thought she was doing the right thing since that’s where she was having pain.

This is a very typical scenario when you’re in that kind of pain and the massage therapist who is probably inexperienced (of course with all good intent) and only worked mostly on the areas of pain. The fact is if you start to “dig” into the area of pain relief you can and will make the problem worse. So, what should your massage therapist do?

1. Whole body evaluation in order to find the muscular imbalances that are causing your pain. This may include a postural assessment.

2. Check for flexibility and range of motion of the muscle/joint.

3. Stretches to do at home/self care techniques.

Often times a quality massage therapist is certified in Neuromuscular Therapy or is trained in some type of advanced manual therapy technique in order to stop pain due to muscle imbalance. This is often time consuming and frequently neglected. Remember healing is a process and takes time especially if you want lasting relief. There is no QUICK FIX!

So the doctor has given you an odd word for your foot pain – Plantar Fasciitis. Odd word and you’re clueless how to care for it. If your doctor recommended a cortisone injection you might want to think twice about it. Our recommendations are …

1. If it’s very painful you may want to ice it – no more than 20 minutes at a time.

2. Rest the painful foot or at least limit your activities.

3. Self massage. You can take a tennis ball and roll it back and forth firmly from the heel to the beginning of the toes. Do this for about 5 minutes or so.

4. Stretch – Although you may have pain in the bottom of the foot, the calf muscle (gastrocnemius) could be tight enough to pull the achilles tendon, therefore pulling on the plantar fascia. So, stretch your calf muscle.

It is our experience using kinesio tape in conjunction with the above recommendations assisted in the healing process tremendously.

Lie on your back with the painful foot raised vertical. Take a towel or rope and put the middle of it on the ball of your foot. Pull the ends of the rope and your toes toward you. You should feel a stretch in the lower leg.
